I should probably hit pause on all my Pitt WIPs, as we have only two weeks left and last week's episode [we need a new word for "canon events have contradicted what I was writing" because I refuse to use the previous option] the entire setup I was working for a Robby/Jesse. Although I could definitely re-write the setup parts, since I've only got a thousand words which isn't much to have to retool - but again, I might as well wait until we know how Robby's day actually ends and if there are further updates on Jesse's situation. And I have a lot (A LOT) of WIPs that involve Samira, and so should wait to see how her storyline wraps up as well - even if I end up simply ignoring it entirely.

As I am not me if I don't write something entirely contradictory at least once, I spent the last two weeks writing nearly 10k of NSFW Santos/Langdon, if I cause a commotion. I kind of can't believe I managed to buckle down and finish it - I get enough confrontation at work, I don't need it in my fanfic, so writing characters actually dislike each other and argue was a stretch for me.

( Thoughts on some various Pitt things (spoilers through 2x13). )

comments

Winter had to get in one last smackdown - am I surprised, no, but to go from several (not sequential) sixty-degree days to a blizzard I barely made it to work in yesterday morning was like a slap in the face. Having to hump my rollator over a mound of snow to get to my garage... this is why I'm okay moving in with my dad. He has an attached garage and his place is almost ten minutes closer to work and involves a lot less roads. Plus we both like Columbo enough to watch it on repeat.

Anyway, we had enough nice-ish days for a few weeks that my writing mojo staggered back home from the war and I wrote this Robby/Duke thing (making the old man yaoi even older, on brand for me, your girl who once ran a con panel called "Old Guys Need Love, Too"), this Justified snippet, and this F1-the-movie snippet.

The most recent episode of The Pitt was super good for me, a person who loves Robby's Samira problems. (I don't love what they're doing with Samira "my eggs are dying" Mohan so far this season but I also don't want to lodge official complaints until it's over and we know everyone's full season storylines.)

comments

I like that we are (seemingly collectively?) trying to use DW more/update more. My problem is usually that I have less things to update on than I did back in the LiveJournal days when I was going to concerts somewhat regularly, and seeing a lot more movies in the cinema.

I watched Bugonia last week - I knew the spoiler going in, which of course made it a different viewing experience, but I didn't know how it would play out. I've only ever watched one other Lanthimos movie (the Nicole Kidman one) and while it was interesting I remember thinking it was maybe not for me. But! Knowing the Bugonia spoiler made me want to watch, and it was probably good for my brain to break from the mindless comedies I've been watching on repeat, and engage with something funky. Yeah, Lake, it's probably not the best that you watch all of The League three times through in a row. Sometimes you just need to watch a fucked-up little movie!!

Neurosurgeon appointment could have been an email, [insert eye-roll emoji here]. He basically does not want to do anything but keep an eye on things for another six months, have me get more MRIs then, and see if there's any change in the syrinx between the two sets of images. Great, yay, another six hundred dollars in medical bills! I mean - I would rather not have a potentially risky spinal surgery if it can be avoided, but "avoided" means I now mentally need to account for having to use some sort of mobility aid more often than not for the rest of my life. But I guess in another decade someone might come up with a better surgical procedure, so who really knows?

comments

When I went for my annual physical in December I confessed that I can no longer stand up straight (plus not being able to walk more than a few steps without an aid), and my NP was like, "Hmm how about physical therapy? And also you need to get in with the neurologist again." - except neurology couldn't get me in until July (apparently the neurologists in my hospital system have certain things they will/won't take patients for and I have a bunch of stuff that ruled out several providers), so the NP's office decided to send me right to neurosurgery, and neurosurgery ordered a bunch of MRIs, since I haven't had them done in more than a decade. MRIs complete, aaaaaand both my NP's office and my physical therapist were like, "Oh hey your MRI reports are up on the patient portal but don't Google anything!". Yeah, I have done enough reading on my various conditions over the years that I only needed to look up where the noted vertebrae (with yet another birth defect) are located in the spine. So! The spinal cyst that was drained in my original 2013 surgery has refilled, which would explain why I can barely walk these days.

I was not really surprised - my neurologist at the time of the original surgery said basically that it would push back needing mobility aids by about ten years, and I made it almost exactly ten before needing to use one full-time. I will not be surprised next week when the neurosurgeon tells me I should get the cyst drained again, and I'm going to guess I'll need the shunt version this time. (The cyst forms because cerebrospinal fluid isn't moving the way it should and the shunt moves the fluid elsewhere so it doesn't fill up the cyst again.) Again I say: where is my robot body?

Physical therapy basically makes me laugh, my therapist is so earnest about it and I'm like, this is a skill babies can do and yet you have to hold on to a belt as I walk down a hallway so I don't fall over, it's ridiculous. Last night we had to do a progress update for insurance so it was a re-do of all the original walking tests I did at the end of December, and even though I don't feel like I have made any progress at all, I did the tests with the Rollator the first time and did them with the cane this time, so that automatically counts as progress for insurance.

comments

Back to work tomorrow after a week off, which I needed desperately and spent most of watching TV and movies while rotting in bed. And getting a decent amount of writing done, after have zero writing motivation since about mid-October. I used the sprint bot on my Discord server for a lot of it, which worked - it was nice to feel like I can still write, I just needed a looming deadline to do it!

Like most everyone, it seems, I watched a bunch of Heated Rivalry (needs more actual hockey), but paused to get caught up on other stuff about halfway through the third episode. I was trying to get in a full Stranger Things rewatch before the next part of the new season drops, but got distracted from that by several movies - I did Wake Up Dead Man (great), Elvis (finally, but I also don't love Butler the way everyone else seems to?), Wind River (very good), Reptile (not good - Benicio Del Toro is great as always, but every ten minutes I was asking what the hell was happening), One Battle After Another (excellent), and Traffic (since it's probably been eighteen years since I last watched it straight through and figured I'd continue my Benicio streak), and finally last night I got around to F1 since it's up on Apple now.

F1 was fine, but I assume it's better if you're into the actual racing. I said in my Letterboxd review that I'm always here for the "messed up old guy gets one last shot at glory!" plot, and there's some nice team-as-family feelings. I get the whole putting the camera in the car while Brad Pitt drives it in the way that they put cameras in the planes for Top Gun: Maverick, but a race car just doesn't move the way a plane does. Also Brad Pitt's face is 60% covered by a helmet that's squishing his cheeks, so the Face Acting opportunities are limited.

I was doing a MI 7/8 back-to-back this afternoon when the news about James Ransone came out, and that derailed me from thinking critically about the movies although I've kept watching just to distract myself. Fuck, man. Evan last year and now this. And as if 2025 hasn't sucked enough.

comments

Have I not posted since July, whoops!

I had a fairly productive summer, writing-wise, but then busy season started at work and the urge to write went out the window. It's happened before and it'll happen again but it annoys me in the meantime.

Busy season at work was slightly busier than normal, as I got promoted to supervisor, and am now officially in charge of all the student workers (as opposed to the unofficially of basically the last decade). And in charge of the other two full-timers, but they mostly manage themselves. Our previous supervisor (who did the schedule) retired and Work BFF (who did the administrative part of student hiring) changed roles, and I refused to do either unless my job title was changed and I got paid for all the new duties. And we weren't allowed to fill Work BFF's old role, so that work was going to get dumped on somebody.

While not writing, I have read a decent number of books - Middlegame, The Bedlam Stacks, The Kingdoms, The Next Patient: The Incredible World of Emergency Medicine, The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, The City Beautiful, Liberty's Daughter, Starter Villain, Black Rabbit Hall, and the first four Murderbot novellas. Several of these were for book club - earlier we read The Mars House and I liked it enough to read all the Natasha Pulley novels I could borrow from the library in e-book.

And now Yuletide assignments are out so I suppose I better write whether I feel like it or not.

comments

I am on vacation AGAIN, which still feels like good motive to post - Lake, you might think, weren't you just on vacation? Yes, but I am still using up the vacation time from 2024 that I did not take because we were so short-staffed the whole flipping year. And now it's July and I haven't used any of 2025's vacation! Of which I have a lot because I have been at my job for twenty years now. Anyway! Our second attempt at finding a full-time third shift person starts on Monday, so I will immediately be training that person - but he has related knowledge in his previous job so should hopefully be a fairly quick train and was looking for something less stressful than his last job, which we are. (Unlike the last person, who quit because she was bored.) Crossing my fingers!

I have not done much while off - took my sister to the new Jurassic movie, which was decent. I am old enough to remember seeing the original in the cinema so none of the ones since have been as good. This one was closer to the original in tone, which I enjoyed, but the dinosaurs are all CGI now, and you can tell. Jonathan Bailey is the Alan Grant-style character in this and he got some good moments, and he's a fine actor, but as I am not a Bridgerton girlie I really don't care about him, lol. (Also his one really Alan moment would have been better if the dinosaurs in it weren't so stupid-looking! Their tails were idiotic! Gah!)

Also watched Sinners, which was great.

I have little else to report. I am still very into The Pitt and have many a WIP - two are basically done and just need me to be in the mood to edit/tinker and then post. I assume I will be in the mood eventually so am just letting the rough drafts be for now. Which is probably a good skill to practice, vs. hurrying up. Also waiting for fandom5k to open; it got pushed back another week so is now much closer to the end of the month. Which does give me more time to do another edit, I suppose.

comments

Since last time - I did not do very much on my vacation besides write (I had grand plans to do a lot of house cleaning but let's be honest here - I can only clean about one thing before I'm wiped, and should probably look into hiring someone to do actual cleaning one of these days), and I am even more into The Pitt.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning was very fun - not my favorite of the series, but had some moments I really enjoyed, some moments that broke my heart, and some moments that I could have done without. (And some moments that should have been in there but McQ and Tom have this thing about only including the things they think are absolutely necessary to entertaining the audience.)

We are short-staffed at work yet again but so far it hasn't been too bad (knock on wood), unlike the last time we were down the third shift position - we have enough part-timers to fill in right now. Tomorrow we're interviewing people for the job so hopefully someone will be in that slot sooner rather than later.

( Karate Kid: Legends notes, in list form, since I went tonight. )

comments

I'm on VACATION, which feels like a good motive to post. I have been at my job for twenty years full-time so I get a whole lot of vacation hours (the only perk left, besides the pension) and last year we were so short-handed that I barely touched them so: it's May and I'm using last year's vacation time!!

I have gotten very into The Pitt. I waited to watch it until it was completely over and I have now written three fics and I want everyone to kiss in various configurations. Doctor Robby is so hot and so sad and so suffering a mental health crisis, and Doctor Langdon is so Needs Rehab and such an asshole and also so hot. SHAWN HATOSY from The Faculty, oh my fucking God I nearly cried laughing when I realized Doctor Hotness With One Foot was STAN. Amazing. And I love Samira and Dana and Mel and Collins and - well, everyone. Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!
For weeks I have been looking forward to going to B&N after work today to grab The Brutalist, since if I'm going to pay to watch it then I want a goddamned physical copy, and my B&N has in the past normally gotten most award-winner new releases when they come out. I checked the website to be sure it was in stock before I stopped and: nope. No B&N closer than an hour away has it in stock. And no other store in town even sells physical media anymore - the last other store that carried new releases closed a few months ago (RIP FYE, I miss you).

Skeletor shaking fists emoji, etc. - I wasn't even going to watch it right away tonight but I don't want to order it. I want to pick it up from a shelf and take it to a human being at a register!!
Winter has been somewhat a struggle - America, etc., plus the weather has been unsteady for months. One day it's freezing and the next day it's fifty degrees, and my body just does not handle the rapid changes well. I have been using a rollator when I go most places, more often than not. If other people are with me I can usually get by with just the cane, or if it's the sort of space where there are close walls, but I can't cross open spaces (like from a parking lot to a shop door) by myself without something bigger than a cane to steady me. Which is really annoying when the place I am trying to go doesn't have a handicap door. Thankfully I can still lift the rollator in and out of my car alone, but there's a lighter three-wheeled option that I will probably buy sooner rather than later and leave the heavier one as a backup.

I daydream about designing some sort of mobility device that I can hook around me like a little cage that will balance me when I need it and stop me from tripping but that I don't have to hold in my hands or lean on.

Speaking of buying things: I am struggling with where to shop for life necessities again these days. I don't want to use Amazon unless there's no other alternative, and I don't want to shop at Target now that they've reversed their DEI policies, and Wal-Mart/Sam's Club has always been terrible so I haven't shopped there in years. Menards is owned by a super MAGA white man so that's out, and we no longer have a Shopko or a KMart here. Apparently Meijer sucks too re: political donations... ugh. Ugh! In general.

And as always, winter writer's block. So I have read five books already this month instead - mostly mystery/thrillers, and the "new" Michael Crichton that James Patterson finished, which had a decent catastrophe plot but was very thin in making the characters feel like actual people.

Ugh! In general.

comments

Well. Yep. Last week was certainly... a week. Then I had to send my elderly cat to join her brother in pet heaven on Saturday (she was fifteen, and had clearly been declining over the previous few days), so that made for a completely shit weekend.

The one bright spot was the new episode of Doctor Odyssey - my new obsession - which Did The Thing, amazingly, somehow, wildly. ( This show is so ridiculous and I love it so much. )

I am so not used to writing fanfic for a currently-airing television show - I know no one would care if I posted something that immediately got jossed (we need a new word for that) in the next episode, but it sure does add an extra level of "I need to write as fast as I can" to things. Or at least a level of "I need to come up with ideas" faster, because I can write fairly quickly if I have to.

In other news: I finished and turned in my Yuletide assignment already! I would like to do something else as well for my recipient but given the on and off writer's block lately, I just went with the flow when this particular inspiration struck.

comments

The Stucky is all posted! Whew! I have a lot of weird feelings about the longest thing I've ever written being for a fandom I'm not "in", and a pairing I don't really "ship" (for lack of better term). Mostly because Marvel overall is a lot of Stuff and I struggle with feeling like I need to be familiar with everything in a canon before I really jump in. (I'm working on this problem!) But readers have left lots of very sweet comments as I've been posting and it seems people still enjoy reading post-CA:TWS canon divergence things even though the movie is 10+ years old, so I am happy with how it's turned out.

Yuletide assignments have arrived and as always, I got what I least expected - but it seems my recipient and I have a good id match so I am excited. Giving it a week or so to ponder before I really sit down and start working - I have a couple basic ideas but am hoping something comes to me that really sparks joy. (Also I'm writing for a currently running canon, which I don't think I've done for Yuletide in a long time - I think the few other TV shows were at least between seasons when Yuletide rolled around.)

I also signed up for Marvel Trumps Hate, which I am vaguely terrified about - I have only done one other fic auction before in my entire career and the person who won was someone I knew (and the other winner never got back to me with what they wanted me to write, which was wild). Plus see above re: Marvel! But one of the mods flattered me into signing up so I figured, what the hell, why not? I don't have much else happening fandom-wise right now besides Yuletide. I really didn't think anyone would bid on me at all since I only dabble in Marvel but there are a few so far!

I'm hoping my extended gross stretch of writer's block has tapered off - last week I saw something mentioning Garden State and thought, "maybe one of these days I should finish the WIP that's only been in my gdocs for like ten years", and added 1500 words to it over two days. And crossing my fingers that today is the last twelve-hour work day (please, work has been so weird the last few months that we need at least one good thing to happen) and that Second Shift is cleared to return tomorrow. I would like to go to my eyebrow appointment in the afternoon and not have to reschedule; I need to chat with a human who isn't my co-workers!

comments

A note, first: I feel much better about the Stucky now, a week after I started writing this entry! But the fact remains... I don't think I have ever been so crabby about posting something in my entire fanfic career. I was so mad at it for several days straight that all I could do was laugh at myself for how stupid I felt. (Part of feeling like shit about it is definitely all the hours I've been working since July plus training the new people leaving me no mental space to think very hard about writing. Bah.)

I didn't want to post all in one go because I didn't want the longest fic I've ever finished and one I'd spent an entire year working on - more than a year, really, since I started outlining it in May 2023 - just immediately disappearing in a busy ship tag. This has happened to me nearly every time I write a popular ship and is thus one of the reasons I usually don't bother with big fandoms. I wind up disappointed every single time. This is a me problem and I understand that but sometimes you just have to let yourself be annoyed about stuff.

Anyway, I planned out posting four chapters a week for a month working up to my WIP Big Bang full reveal date that's now next weekend - thinking cool, that gives me time to do some final editing before posting on Fridays and Saturday, and hopefully collect some subscribers. Except after a week I would just look at the binder and think, "I don't even want to open this." (Plus, every time I'm in the mood to edit at home, the old lady kitty wants to sit on my lap - and she is old so I am not going to deny her cuddles.)

So now I am still several chapters behind in my posting BUT once I got to the chapter where Steve and Bucky actually start to have feelings, it picked up a lot more subscribers, which eased some of my annoyance. Also we're finally done training people at work for a while, so even though I'm still on twelve-hour shifts for the next week or two (the second shift person is out on a medical leave), I'm not trying to talk for several hours straight or figure out training projects.

Enough of all that: For the last couple months I have been writing - like half a sentence at a time - a Matt/Ben based on those pictures of them as teens with the matching pukka shell necklaces, and yesterday my writer's block lifted like a black cloud being blown away, so I finished this!! The first Matt/Ben thing I have written in probably twenty years.

comments

I have started posting the Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes post-CA:TWS fic I started for NaNoWriMo last year, aaaaaah. (I finished it for WIP Big Bang, so I'm posting a few chapters a week until my WIPBB reveal date - I didn't want to just drop 70k into a busy 'ship tag and have it immediately disappear <strike>because that would have been a waste of the year+ I spent working on it</strike> so I figured I'd post this way.) I have been working on it for so long that it feels strange for even some of it to be out in the world! But it's good that I am or honestly this year would have been mostly a wash, fic-writing wise.

Work has not changed much since my last update, but the new person should be off training after this week! Only for second shift to be out with a medical thing in October, soooo there's even more overtime still in my future. I attempted to figure out the best time to use vacation time (December) - and realized I have a week of legal holiday I need to use before I can even get to the vacation, since I've worked every LH we've had so far this year. My boss just shrugged when I said how much I'd have to roll over into next year, so at least that won't be a problem.

It's not really all the hours that's using up all my brainspace, it was the training two new people basically at the same time - so hopefully this should be winding down a little and I can stop having to talk about work every time I post here!! I put in my (mostly the usual) Yuletide nominations so I'm looking forward to that.

comments

Sadness!! 900 million Matt/Ben references suddenly everywhere: rather delightful. Although I have no idea what that ask I got on tumblr was really supposed to mean.

I have zero brain for writing lately and I know it's a combo of all the working plus finishing the Stucky epic (currently in editing, when I feel like editing) - I plan to start posting it on the 20th a couple chapters a week so that I finish posting on October 20th, my WIP Big Bang posting date.

I also haven't kept up with my usual Yuletide possibilities spreadsheet since February and I feel very meh about it right now, but that doesn't mean I will still feel meh about it come signups, so I guess I should at least attempt some nominations. I rewatched The Martian twice in a row a few weeks ago so that's still floating around in my brain.

Lately my after-work shows have been House (only an episode at a time or I have weird medical dreams), re-watching season one of 9-1-1, and The Larry Sanders Show from the 90s. I see the House/Wilson but I'm also not sure I could actually write House in the right fashion. And 9-1-1 fandom just looks too insane to want to wade into any of that!

comments

I keep thinking, oh, I should post - but honestly there's not much to report besides a rundown of the television I've been watching.

Finally finished Northern Exposure - for all that I'd seen the early episodes several times, I'd never watched all the way through to the end. I know I mentioned in a previous entry how much the Joel/Maggie hate-flirt annoyed me, and it continued to annoy me all the way up until they actually get together. And then I didn't mind that it was canon, and after they broke up I wanted them to bang some more - it's just the stupid flirting via insults that I can't stand. (I also hate the "the boy pulling a girl's ponytail on the playground means he likes her" thing, and this is the grown up version of that!!) But Maggie's characterization mellowed as the seasons went by, which I appreciated, and I liked her much more by the end. ANYWAY, overall thoughts: I'm glad I powered through the whole series after all these years. I don't know if I'll write any more fic besides the little Joel/Ed thing I did, but never say never. I do have a gdocs file of vague ideas.

After that, I watched the rest of 30 Rock, which was fun! I'd seen the first two? three? seasons years ago but also never finished. But I needed a new nighttime show after finishing NX, and while I was enjoying The Mentalist it wasn't as comedic as I prefer for before bed. (I should go back to The Mentalist.)

Figured out the last remaining scenes for the Stucky and somehow I'm still mostly on track with my writing schedule for it - I just have to power through the rough draft stage for the last few scenes, and then I can tweak them more into shape. Currently I'm a little stuck but I know it's because I have two scenes that are sort of the same right in a row (that, or I just need to start the second one differently) so maybe I'll swap things around a little.

I was on staycation for a few days over my birthday; I went out to lunch with my dad, hung out with my sister, got my eyebrows waxed and took myself out to lunch one of the days so I could get some Stucky work done, and then mostly watched a lot of TV and tinkered with writing projects. I watched season one of 9-1-1, which ended up being less stressful and more so over the top with the ridiculous calls that I basically laughed in disbelief the whole time and was only sad about Peter Krause's character. (And I only cried at the old hoarder brothers episode.) I may or may not write an entire entry about it later on, but that depends on if I keep watching.

It's been slower at work since it's summer, so I'm using the downtime there to watch stuff on Hulu since the adblocker skips the commercials. I finished season one of The Bear yesterday - I'll probably keep going with it. I didn't find it as stressful as others have mentioned, just sad. (Aside from always being worried someone's going to cut themselves during the on-screen vegetable chopping.) It's definitely not a comedy!

comments

So lovely to find messages from friends in the mailbox instead of more "how dare Democrats try to recall Robin Vos!! illegal!!" fliers from the local Republican party.

I did laugh at the actual flier about the recall, because the headline on it was "Stop Vos from selling Wisconsin land to China!!", which is probably the only headline that would make local conservatives look twice at the flier. Personally, I loathe the man because he's constantly trying to fuck with the public University system.

It is May! I have figured out where to end the stupid giant Stucky fic that I started last August! I signed up for WIP Big Bang with it so that I would be given an external deadline, and made myself a schedule. This is going to be the longest fic I've ever finished, which I find hilarious.

comments
