So in 2021, HBO Max dropped James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which is a standalone sequel to the one with Grossface McJaredLeto. (You don't need to watch the Jared Leto one to care about this.) In it, Idris Elba leads a team of super-powered convicts on a mission to a fictional country where they're supposed to destroy all trace of America's involvement with Project Starfish, which is a large starfish-shaped space alien thing that's been in captivity and has been experimented on (it makes little drones of itself and they attach to people's faces and then Starro controls them). Anyway, John Cena's Peacemaker character is a jingoistic asshole, but he does get some good lines that he says with a straight face while Idris Elba is like "wtf, man?". In the end, Peacemaker kills Rick Flag when Flag wants to expose Project Starfish, and then Idris shoots Peacemaker in the neck and a building falls on him, so you think he's dead.

I watched it basically because Idris Elba is there and Jared Leto isn't, but it was funny and weird, and overall entertaining.

Then I heard the show opens with a dance number for credits, makes Peacemaker a canon bisexual, and he has a threesome with a minor female character and his former partner in patrolling the town they live in for crime - and was like, "Well, now this sounds extremely my jam," and watched it. Three times in one weekend.

Episode 1: Chris has healed up and the doctor says he can leave, which his face is confused by, as seen here:

She tells him to keep up with physical therapy for his shoulder - this doesn't happen, of course - and not to raise his arm up high. Chris is like "hmm, am I supposed to go back to prison?", because that's where Amanda Waller got him from in the movie, but after discussing with the janitor he smoked pot with during his convalescence, he decides to just hurry out of the hospital. One of the nurses alerts a "Mr. Murn" on his hurry out.

Leota Adebayo and her wife arrive at a motel, and it's established they're in this town so Leota can do some work for her mom (Amanda Waller) since she and her wife both lost their jobs. Murn texts Leota that Chris has left the hospital.

A taxi drops Chris off at his trailer - it's red, white & blue - and he has to pay with his Peacemaker helmet. All of his extra keys are gone so he has to break into his own house (he hasn't been there in four years). He finds his cell phone plugged in - his dad never turned off the service like Chris asked him to, and he has like 400 voicemails from Vigilante.

Leota, Murn, Harcort, and Economos appear outside. Murn says if Chris works for their team, he won't go back to prison. Plus, he still has the bomb in his head from the original Project Starfish mission.

Chris goes to his super-racist dad's house to pick up his pet eagle. (Robert Patrick is his super-racist dad.) Racist dad is not sympathetic to Chris having been shot in Corto Maltese. Auggie sucks. Otoh, the eagle doesn't suck, and is excited to see Chris. He tries to make conversation with Auggie while they eat dinner buuut Auggie is terrible.

Auggie does make Peacemaker's uniforms, and has an entire quantum unfolding room in his house where he does all that. He rattles off a bunch of neo-nazi bullshit while handing over a new helmet.

Chris goes to meet the team at a restaurant, wearing his Peacemaker outfit. They all make fun of him for it. He's not entirely smart enough to understand how hard they're making fun of him, aww. Adrian (Vigilante, but not in costume) is the busboy at the restaurant. He makes this face at Chris:

Oh no, I love him already.

Murn gives Chris the file on their mission. Adrian's very excited that Peacemaker is back and does a goofy twerking dance as he takes the garbage out behind the restaurant, then has a very awkward conversation with his co-worker, since he has to make up a reason why he's doing his goofy dance.

As the team leaves, Leota asks to meet Eagly, who nips at her. Chris tells her the eagle hugged him earlier, a conversation which will be significant later on in the show. They chat for another second, then leave. Driving down a street, Chris sees Harcourt go into a bar, and follows her. She insults a dude who tries to hit on her while she's having a beer. Chris then approaches, which she does not appreciate. The first dude's friend comes up and she beats him up in like three moves. Chris is impressed, and suggests they hook up, but she's like "what the fuck, can't I just drink my beer and be a woman who wears makeup without men thinking I'm gonna jump in the sack?" and leaves. He makes eye contact with another woman across the bar and goes home with her instead.

Meanwhile, Leota talks to her mom on videochat - she's supposed to plant a diary in Chris' trailer making him out to be a raging conspiracy theorist/framing him for killing the people they're about to kill on this mission. (Their mission involves mind-controlling aliens, but the alien part has to be kept a secret.)

Chris looks though the woman's record collection after they bone and is excited for the glam metal. John Cena performs an entire singalong with a dance while wearing nothing but briefs. (He really commits to this role, it's great.) The woman then attacks him with a knife and he barely gets out of it because she's got some sort of super-strength. He ends up going out a window, and she jumps after him, but he gets to his car where there's a helmet with sonic boom power - this blows her up and destroys his car.

Fittingly, "Love Bomb" plays over the end credits. Also, each episode ends with an bit cut from an earlier scene, usually something ridiculous. This time it's Auggie telling Chris one of the helmets gives everyone around the wearer scabies. "Why?" Chris asks, and Auggie's answer is that every man should have scabies once in their life.
